I cannot believe I forgot to send this earlier. OTOH, my daughter just informed me I have ADHD and boy is she right! (laughing emoji here…)
BEST GARAGE SALE EVER!
Because…
It’s an ART Garage Sale!
One of the largest groups of artists in Sonoma County is having their annual Art Garage Sale on Saturday, May 20, from 9am to 2pm.
Two art studio buildings, Studio Santa Rosa and 33Arts, at 3840 Finley AVE (formerly known as “the Barracks”), along with guest artists, will host this special event.
In addition to older works of art and “seconds” (not our best work, but maybe it’s ‘good enough’ for YOU), we sell off supplies, surplus, leftovers, etc.: Paints, canvases, picture frames, beads, fabric, rubberstamps, wood boxes, and even a vintage metal cabinet for…autopsy slides.

I’M STILL HERE! AND READY FOR ART TRAILS!
The first weekend of our Sonoma County Art Trails open studios event is coming up fast! As in….this weekend!
My studio will be open Saturday and Sunday, from 10-5, September 24 & 25, and October 1 & 2.
You can check our website to see work by 125 Sonoma County artists.
And you can see MY listing there, too! I’m #63 on the tour. #61 is Cynthia Jackson-Hein, painter of quietly-aging landscapes, in the building across the parking lot (Studio Santa Rosa, bldg. 32), and #62 is Serena Hazard, abstract artist extraordinaire, on the 2nd floor of my building, 33Arts, bldg. 33 at 3840 Finley Avenue. (NOT the community center, we’re in the buildings formerly known as “the Barracks”, the housing units left over from a former Naval air base.)
Yep, I’ve been out of the picture for awhile. Several severe health issues took me down and made my life miserable. (Not fatal! Just painful and exhausting as all heck.) Now I’m on the other side, grateful for everything and everybody who helped me get through.
So my studio is even messier than usual, but don’t worry, I kinda like it that way! Some artists like to make their creative space look like an art gallery, or museum. Me? Not so much.
I work in a mess, I create in a mess, and I’m never sure exactly where I’m going with each new work of art. Sometimes all the options are overwhelming, but eventually, I get to where I want to be.
It’s my process, and that’s never gonna change. What I love about it? You get to see EVERYTHING involved with making my artwork: The equipment, the materials, even my process. (I have a couple works-in-progress.)
There’s no single way to be an artist, a creative in the world, and I’m living proof!
So come on by, say hello, explore, open drawers, pick things up, try things on,ask your questions, and have a good time!

This Friday, story-telling artists Teri Sloat, Caren Catterall , and I will present the powerful stories at the heart of our artwork at Corrick’s Stationary, Art Gallery, and Gifts in downtown Santa Rosa, CA from 5-7. If you missed the first presentation in October, this is your chance! I have so many stories, I probably won’t be repeating myself, so even if you did attend, it will still be ‘fresh’! Second, my studio is once again open by appointment! Contact info below in my email signature. Texting is best, email is second-best. Phone calls are the worst, because I get West Coat and East Coast spam. Ugh! Or contact me through Studio Doorz, a website for visitors anywhere in the world to find my studio. I WILL BE OPEN BY APPOINTMENT ONLY FOR ART TRAILS THIS YEAR
You KNOW how much I love having visitors to my studio! It’s the single more powerful way for people to connect with my artwork, my creative space, my stories, and me.
So it is with heavy heart that I announce I will NOT be open for the annual Art Trails Sonoma County open studio tour this year.
I am always open by appointment, of course, and will be for the tour.
But due to health concerns, and the size of my indoor space, I can’t be open to the general public those two weekends.
I fell in my studio two weeks before I had knee replacement surgery at the end of June. I was already scheduled for physical therapy for my knee, but had to wait almost two months to be scheduled for the fall. (I sort of displaced my sacroiliac joint, and suffererd constant, dull, never-ending pain for months. NOT FUN.)
Thank heavens for physical therapy. I’m healing, and feeling better.
But I still can’t even be in my studio for more than 3-4 hours at a time, I can’t stand for long periods of time, and frankly, I’m freaked out at the Delta variant with Covid-19. (I’m vaccinated, but it’s still scary.)
Keeping my fingers crossed that we’ll all find our way through this repeat of 2020 (DANG!!!) And when we do, I will host my open-to-everyone studio events again.
On the other hand, I’ve been asked to participate in a two-artist show at Corrick’s on Fourth Street in Santa Rosa, for the month of Octoboer, with local artist Teri Sloat. And now I’ll have time to create some new work for it! I was on a roll making mini-shrines for the past 18 months, hit a wall, and I’m now on a roll again. (Yay!)

FIRST ANNUAL ARTISTS GARAGE SALE
Definitely not your average garage sale!
The artist studios at 3840 Finley Avenue, Santa Rosa will host their first Artists Garage Sale on Sunday, September 22, from noon to 4.
Artists at Studio Santa Rosa and 33Arts (in the former Naval base buildings aka “The Barracks” off Wright Road/Fulton Road) will sell off their no-longer-need art materials, tools, and supplies at bargain basement prices.
Organizer Luann Udell says, “Artists accrue quite a lot of stuff they never use in their creative process, especially mixed media artists. Our group is super excited to clear out space and pass these items on to a good home.”
Frames, brushes, paints, etc. will be some of the offerings, as well as artwork—older work, seconds, discontinued items, etc. New art, too!
But there will be a range of delightfully unusual items, too. Rubberstamps (and leather stamps, and metal alphabet sets), old dental tools, ugly pearls, vintage fabric, old wood and metal boxes, and more. Even the buildings’ managers are on board. “I have a lot of weird stuff to move!” says 33Arts manager Julian Billotte. His wife Anna chimed in, “Me, too!” The Studio Santa Rosa manager Greg Brown says, “Ditto!”
The event is free and open to all. Creatives, makers, artists, art teachers, art students, and art organizations are encouraged to attend, because….“We need you to buy this stuff so we have room to buy MORE stuff!”

Okay, that was my official announcement. Here’s my backstory:
Years ago, my friend Bonnie Blandford told me about an artist garage sale she’d started years go. (It’s still going!) The rules were strict: Only art supplies, materials, and tools the artists’ had used (or thought they were gonna use!) in their work. Also artwork: Seconds, discontinued items, damaged work, etc.
It was hugely successful, to the point where eventually, some artists had to take sabbaticals because they’d cleared out all their unwanted/unneeded stuff.) She went on to participate in an online version of this, at The Artist Garage Group on Facebook.
I was enchanted with the idea! I started one where I lived, in Keene NH. I found a large room at our public library, marked out spaces for each participant, and invited all the artists I knew to participate.
It was a lot of work. It was so much work, I didn’t have time to put together and label MY stuff! But it was also a huge success, and people begged me to do another one the next year.
Unfortunately, that was the year we sold off almost everything in our house, and moved to Santa Rosa California in 2014.
I recently moved my studio again, to 3840 Finley Avenue. I also had to clear out a space where I’d stashed my antique boxes, frames, and framing supplies.
I thought, “I could have an artist garage sale here!” I wouldn’t have to haul stuff to another venue, I could do it in the building.
Then I thought, “I wonder if anyone else here accumulates as much wonderful stuff as I do….?” Turns out, yeah, they do!
So we have around two dozen artists, maybe more, who will be unloading all kinds of useful, wonderful, quirky, eclectic stuff. (Turns out the two buildings’ managers are REALLY excited about this!)
Down the road, I hope to make this a more inclusive event. We have a lot of artists in Sonoma County, most of us have been making our creative work for a long time, and we’ve all accumulated a lot of flotsam and jetsom along the way. (Really nice flotsam and jetsom….!)
So come on down and see what you can find! Bring a friend or two, or six. I can almost guarantee you’ll find something you just can’t live without (because that’s what we thought when we got it.)
Reuse, repurpose, upcycle, and share. It’s good for us, it’s good for you, and it’s good for our planet. (And it’ll be fun, too!)

So you get two buildings full of art for the price of one! Er….the event is free, of course.
I have new work in jewelry, but I’m preparing to restock five galleries in New Hampshire (part of the League of NH Craftsmen’s network).
Come tell me if I’ve managed to provide a cohesive body of work for each one! Oh, and one pair of earrings is for my sister back in Michigan, so you can’t have those. (But I can always make you a similar pair.)

Well, I was so busy making new stuff, and organizing my new studio space, and picking up spilled seed beads (it happens all the time), I forgot to let you know….. Art at the Source starts this weekend! Two weekends, actually. This Saturday and Sunday and next, June 1-2 and June 8-9, from 10-5. Come for Sally’s extraordinary watercolors, sophisticated and beautifully precise, a bold, unique style I’ve never seen duplicated anywhere else. Stay for Joann Cassady’s whimsical ceramic work, including garden sculptures, and Mark Freed’s colorful, intricate glass work. And me! New jewelry featuring cast sterling horses and my own little handmade animals, with repurposed “old pawn/Native American/Taxco sterling-and-turquoise jewelry (with a little antique coral thrown in!) Also small framed work, small sculptures, and larger framed fiber collages. Same ol’ bright red hair, and smilin’ face. :^) See you there! hugs, Luann P.S. Some folks have asked why I’m not doing AATS at my own studio. When the application period for AATS began, I was still at my South A Street, which was not eligible for AATS (wrong side of 101.) Sally Baker graciously invited me to show with her! It wasn’t til two months later that I moved into my (now eligible) studio at 33Arts. So a big shout-out and a thank-you to Sally! Without her, I wouldn’t have been able to do AATS at all this year… But NEXT YEAR, we’ll see what happens! |
SONOMA COUNTY ART TRAILS!
This county-wide art event is just around the corner! Two weekends in October: Saturday and Sunday, October 13-14, and October 20-21.
Opening reception at Corrick’s in downtown Santa Rosa this Friday, October 5, 4-6pm, and YES, I will be there!
Of note: I’m #1! Yep, this year, I am the first artist in the catalog!
This means nothing, actually. It’s a good strategy to mix up the tour’s layout every year.
Still….I’m owning it!
And I promise you this: My studio will be messy, but INTERESTING.

(But I don’t think that would be fair to Linda Sorenson.) (BTW, oddly, I also know a New Hampshire artist named Linda Sorenson. This confuses me sometimes.)
But I digress.

GOOD THINGS COME IN THREE’S
Wow, what a day!
This morning I was dee-lighted to see I was featured on Cynthia Tinapple’s well-curated, internationally focused polymer art website, Polymer Clay Daily. It’s an honor!
Melanie Plenda, freelance journalist, wrote a great article about me and the inspiration for my work for the March 4, 2014 issue of The Union Leader. But I’ll to photo the article for you because I can’t find it online. Thank you, Melanie!
And I’m almost ready for our next/last indoor home tag sale this Saturday, from 10-1! I’ve staged two downstairs rooms full of furniture and wonderful accessories: Vintage dishes, vintage pottery (McCoy!!), silverware sets, pillows, artwork, antique and vintage furniture such as a dining room table, chairs, book shelves and book cases, a child’s antique school desk (I almost wrote “antique child” and that made no sense), vintage glassware, vintage stemware, a very cool doll house, candlesticks, and tons more.
